Snow, a Ferrari, and a roof rack—does that really work?
A Ferrari 296 GTB in the snowfall in St. Moritz.
On the roof: an ASPHALTKIND Performance roof box.
We tried out this exact combination ourselves.
And something interesting happened: It wasn't just the Ferrari that drew attention. The roof box also turned out to be an eye-catcher.
For us, the trip was also the best proof of why we developed ASPHALTKIND in the first place.
After all, a performance roof box isn't just meant to look good on an extraordinary car.
It's designed to ensure that you choose this exact car even when you have luggage to bring along.
Can you mount a roof box on a Ferrari 296 GTB?
Yes. A roof box can also be mounted on a Ferrari 296 GTB using a suitable mounting system.
Of course, the Ferrari doesn't have traditional roof rails. That's why the mounting process is different from that of a station wagon or SUV.
When it comes to supercars like these, we first consider the roof surfaces, the specific vehicle configuration, and the intended use.
Depending on the situation, vacuum carrier systems, for example, may be a suitable solution.
Multiple vacuum suction cups create a secure connection between the mounting system and suitable surfaces on the vehicle. At the same time, the system can be removed when the additional storage space is not needed.
In our view, it is precisely this flexibility that makes a Ferrari what it is.
To St. Moritz in the Ferrari 296 GTB
St. Moritz has come to hold a special meaning for ASPHALTKIND.
We were out and about there in various supercars. It was never just about placing the cars in front of a beautiful backdrop for a photo shoot.
We actually drove there with them.
For the Ferrari 296 GTB, this meant, among other things, snow-covered roads, winter conditions, and an ASPHALTKIND roof box that really came in handy during the trip.
These are exactly the kinds of situations that interest us.
After all, almost any product can be showcased effectively in a parking lot.
Things really get exciting when Ferrari, the roof rack, luggage, and the trip all come together.
Why a Ferrari, of all cars, could use some extra storage space
The 296 GTB was not designed to carry as many suitcases as possible.
He doesn't have to.
After all, the driving experience, lightweight construction, and performance are the main focus.
However, the situation is different if two people want to travel for several days, rather than just on Sunday morning.
In addition to bags, you'll also bring jackets, shoes, and other items.
In winter, the space required increases even further.
And at some point, a question arises that we hear from many of our customers:
Should we really go with the Ferrari—or maybe the more practical car?
This is exactly where our roof box is designed to make a difference.
About 400 liters of additional storage space in the Ferrari 296 GTB
The ASPHALTKIND performance roof box provides approximately 400 liters of additional volume.
This suddenly creates a completely different travel situation in a two-seater sports car.
Existing vehicle luggage can still be stored where Ferrari intended it to be. In addition, bags, clothing, or other equipment can be placed on the roof.
This way, you don't have to turn every piece of luggage into a minimalist packing experiment.
Above all, though, it gives you one less reason to leave the Ferrari at home.
And that's exactly what matters to us.
Driving a Ferrari in the snow isn't a rational decision
Of course, there are vehicles that are objectively better suited for a winter vacation.
More ground clearance.
More doors.
More trunk space.
Maybe even heated cup holders.
But reason isn't the reason why people buy a Ferrari 296 GTB.
A supercar stirs up emotions precisely in situations where driving it seems a little unreasonable.
On an Alpine pass.
In the snowfall.
On the way to St. Moritz.
That's exactly when the trip itself becomes part of the vacation.
A roof box shouldn't turn the Ferrari into just another car
That's why additional storage space alone isn't enough for us.
A conventional roof box could, in theory, also be used to transport luggage.
However, there's a second question that comes up when it comes to a Ferrari:
Does the product match the vehicle's character?
That's exactly why we designed our Performance roof box to be flat and elongated.
It should not unnecessarily dominate the vehicle's silhouette.
At the same time, we use carbon as a structural and visible material.
This isn't just a run-of-the-mill luggage box that happens to be sitting on a Ferrari.
Our goal is a solution that blends seamlessly into this automotive world.
You should hardly notice a roof box at all
There’s one idea that has been with us at ASPHALTKIND since the early stages of product development.
You should hardly notice a roof box at all.
You'll notice that there's suddenly a lot more luggage.
It's also quite noticeable that people turn to look at the car.
On the other hand, we want to minimize the negative aspects of a roof box as much as possible.
That is why, from the very beginning, we have focused on four key topics:
- Aerodynamics
- Stability
- Lightweight construction
- Design
Today, vehicle-specific connectivity is added as another key element.
After all, the more unique a car becomes, the less effective a one-size-fits-all solution is.
Carbon and Ferrari: Function and Design Go Hand in Hand
Carbon fiber has long been a staple of modern Ferrari models.
Depending on the configuration, this material can also be found in numerous places in the 296 GTB.
That's why our carbon-fiber roof box is a good fit for the vehicle, both technically and aesthetically.
We manufacture the ASPHALTKIND performance roof box in our dedicated fiber composite production facility in Germany.
We can customize the look to match the Ferrari.
For example:
- Exposed carbon fiber
- Gloss black
- Matte black
- Custom body color paint finish
- custom stripes
- accent colors matching the vehicle
- ASPHALTKIND branding
- completely clean finish
This results in a different combination for each vehicle.
The roof box isn't supposed to fit just any Ferrari. It's supposed to fit this exact Ferrari.
Performance doesn't stop at the engine.
When it comes to the Ferrari 296 GTB, people usually talk about acceleration, hybrid technology, or driving dynamics.
At first glance, a roof box seems like a far cry from that.
For us, however, both are part of the same way of thinking.
When an accessory is used on a high-performance vehicle, we also need to consider aerodynamics, stability, weight, and integration.
That's why our roof box wasn't conceived as a way to make a standard luggage box particularly expensive.
From the very beginning, we wanted to develop a roof box that would be suitable for high-performance vehicles.
Designed for Performance.
For us, St. Moritz wasn't just a photo shoot with a trailer
One key difference lies in how they are actually used.
We didn't just haul the Ferrari to St. Moritz on a trailer, mount the roof rack, and then take a few pictures.
The vehicle was part of the trip.
The roof box was opened.
It was used.
And we were out on the winter roads with that combination.
It is precisely this real-life use that is more valuable to us than any studio photo.
Because this allows us to see for ourselves where our products are effective and where we can make further improvements.
From supercar to touring car—without reinventing it
We don't want to turn the Ferrari 296 GTB into a classic touring car.
That would miss the mark.
Instead, we would like to reduce a practical limitation.
If you're bringing more luggage, the Ferrari can suddenly be used for trips for which you might previously have chosen a different vehicle.
This results in more actual kilometers.
More roads.
More memories.
And less time in the garage.
That's exactly what "Travel Performance" means to us.

Ferrari 296 GTB with a roof box: This is exactly the kind of trip we mean by “Travel Performance”
A Ferrari in the snow.
A carbon-fiber roof box on the roof.
And St. Moritz as the destination.
On paper, an SUV would probably be the more sensible choice.
But the SUV isn't a Ferrari.
Our job, therefore, is not to make the Ferrari more sensible.
We simply want to ensure that a lack of storage space is less of a drawback.
That leaves only one question: which road should we take?
Travel Performance for Extraordinary Vehicles.
