Porsche 992 GT3 RS Roof Rack | ASPHALTKIND

by Nils

No frunk? No problem: Why the 992 GT3 RS Needs a Special Roof Box Solution

The Porsche 992 GT3 RS is one of the most uncompromising road cars Porsche currently builds. But that’s exactly why a problem arises as soon as you want to do more than just drive a lap in the car—you actually want to go on a road trip.

The GT3 RS does not have a traditional front trunk. Instead, Porsche uses that space for the car's cooling and aerodynamics systems.

This is consistent with the performance.

Not really ideal for a road trip with two people.

That's exactly why we at ASPHALTKIND have developed not only a roof box for the Porsche 992 GT3 RS, but also our own vehicle-specific mounting system.

After all, a high-performance roof box isn't much use if it doesn't attach properly to the car.

And in a GT3 RS, this connection shouldn't feel like an aftermarket accessory.

Can you mount a roof box on a Porsche 992 GT3 RS?

Yes. The ASPHALTKIND Performance roof box can be mounted on the vehicle using our base carrier system, which was developed specifically for the 992 GT3 RS.

However, a conventional roof rack—the kind you see on a station wagon or SUV—is out of the question for this purpose.

The 992 GT3 RS does not have traditional roof rails. At the same time, active aerodynamics, the rear wing, airflow management, and lightweight construction define nearly every aspect of the car.

That's why we didn't want to try to adapt an existing off-the-shelf solution to the Porsche in any way.

We designed the connection from the vehicle's perspective.

The result is a custom ASPHALTKIND base carrier featuring a specially developed connection at the rear wing mount.

Why We Developed Our Own GT3 RS Roof Rack

At ASPHALTKIND, we've been grappling with one question for years:

How do you add extra storage space to an extraordinary car without making the solution feel like a downgrade?

With the GT3 RS, this question was particularly intriguing.

The vehicle is so technically unique that, in our view, a one-size-fits-all solution would not have done justice to the car's capabilities.

That is why we developed a vehicle-specific base mount that takes the GT3 RS's design into account while also allowing for quick installation of the Performance roof box.

The support system must meet several requirements at the same time.

  • secure connection to the vehicle
  • Quick assembly and disassembly
  • Minimal impact on the vehicle
  • Seamless integration into the overall picture
  • Practical use for road trips and track days

That last point, in particular, was important to us.

After all, many GT3 RS drivers don't just use their cars for Sunday morning drives. They take them to track days, events, over Alpine passes, or across Europe.

In under eight minutes: Install the roof box, drive a track day, and continue your trip

A typical scenario illustrates very well why quick disassembly is important.

On Friday, we'll head to the track day in the GT3 RS with our luggage and gear.

Upon arrival, the roof box and mounting system are removed. The vehicle can then be driven on the racetrack without the additional system.

After the track day, we put the roof box back on the car and continue our journey.

The ASPHALTKIND system can be installed or removed in less than eight minutes.

This does not result in any permanent changes to the vehicle's design.

Instead, the driver decides for himself when he needs additional storage space.

Road trip: Let's go.
Track day: off.
Continuing the trip: back on.

The GT3 RS remains a GT3 RS.

He can suddenly carry a lot more.

What happens with the GT3 RS featuring the Manthey Racing conversion?

A customer vehicle equipped with a Manthey Racing conversion later demonstrated just how vehicle-specific such a development can actually be.

The additional aerodynamics affect areas of the vehicle that are relevant to our original mounting solution. Among other things, additional fins are located where, in the standard GT3 RS configuration, there is space for parts of the mounting system.

As a result, the previous solution did not simply continue to work as is.

So we had to start from scratch again.

It is precisely these kinds of cases that illustrate to us the difference between a universal accessory and a vehicle-specific performance solution.

We adapted the system to the changed vehicle configuration, rather than expecting the customer to adapt the car to our roof box.

For us, this development process has come to be just as much a part of ASPHALTKIND as the carbon roof box itself.

A roof box on a car with an active rear wing?

Especially on the 992 GT3 RS, a roof box seems almost contradictory at first glance.

The large active rear wing, the DRS system, and the sophisticated airflow management are among the car's most striking features.

That is why we do not consider the roof box and mounting system in isolation from the car.

Positioning, mounting, shape, and use must all be compatible.

In the case of the GT3 RS, this approach led to the development of our own base model.

A vehicle-specific mounting solution was also developed for the Lamborghini Huracán STO.

Other supercars, on the other hand, can be secured using vacuum-based mounting systems.

For us, there isn't just one mounting solution that fits every vehicle. There is a solution that must be tailored to each specific car.

A roof box shouldn't look like a downgrade on a GT3 RS

This isn't just a technical issue.

The same applies to design.

A standard plastic roof box can make perfect sense on a regular everyday car. On a GT3 RS, however, the requirements are different.

That's why we manufacture our Performance roof box out of carbon fiber and customize it to fit each specific vehicle.

Available finishes include, for example:

  • Exposed carbon fiber
  • Gloss black
  • Matte black
  • Custom body color paint finish
  • Custom stripes or graphics
  • Accent colors that match the rims, brake calipers, or vehicle details
  • ASPHALTKIND branding
  • completely clean finish

Especially with the GT3 RS, PTS paint schemes, the Weissach Package, carbon fiber components, and custom configurations often play a major role.

That's why we don't just treat the roof box as a luggage compartment.

It will become part of the vehicle configuration.

About 400 liters of storage space changes how the GT3 RS is used

The ASPHALTKIND performance roof box provides approximately 400 liters of additional volume.

At first glance, that sounds like a dry statistic.

In practice, however, this extra space changes the ways in which the GT3 RS can be used.

You no longer have to squeeze bags between the seats and the roll bar. Jackets, shoes, and other luggage all have their own designated space. Plus, track day gear can be transported much more easily.

This results in one thing above all else:

One less reason to take a different car on the trip.

That's exactly what we see with our customers, too.

The vehicles—complete with roof boxes—aren't just driven around for photo shoots. They head to events, go on road trips, travel through Switzerland, head toward Monaco, or go to track days.

That is the key point for us.

Exceptional cars belong on exceptional roads.

Travel Performance Over Practicality

We don't want to turn a GT3 RS into a practical sports car.

That would be the wrong approach.

Instead, let's solve the one practical problem that often determines whether you'll even take it along on a longer trip.

Storage space.

This makes the journey to the destination part of the experience once again.

The drive to the track day is part of the track day.

An Alpine pass is a must for a ski vacation.

And the journey to St. Moritz or Monaco doesn't begin just outside the hotel.

That is exactly what we mean by “Travel Performance.”

Frequently Asked Questions About the Porsche 992 GT3 RS Roof Rack
